Community Gardeners reveal 2019 plans
Wanstead’s brilliant Community Gardeners have set themselves a big challenge for 2019, with plans to add to the twenty odd areas they already manage by turning the manky strip of weeds and litter between the George pub and Wanstead Station into a wildflower meadow. The group took over the space a couple of years ago and have since been in battle with the weeds. This year, they have applied for a Community Infrastructure Grant to fund removal of some of the current shrubs as well as more effective treatment of weeds, so that the plot can be reinvented as a haven for insects by converting it to a meadow of native flowers.
The intrepid gardeners are also hoping to take over the two empty beds at Wanstead Health Centre in Wanstead Place. The Victorian building would look a joy planted with the team’s signature style of old-fashioned cottage garden flowers. As if that wasn’t enough, they have their eye on the large pavement corner outside Gail’s Bakery, which is currently just dead space. Their vision is to install a couple of old metal water tanks converted into planters and filled with flowers. Sounds hard work – but will look amazing. CGW can’t wait to see it all.
